MODERATORS

As stated in our sidebar:

Although our initial goal was to provide a new platform for r/PoliticalCompassMemes, we welcome the expansion to various new topics and themes.

which is why we are finally opening this thread.

If you have any suggestions for a community that you would like to run on our instance this is the place to post them. While our Rule 0 (no illegal content) remains our golden policy, there are a couple more guidelines for you to follow.

Community creation guidelines

  1. Take out your own trash: if you propose the creation of a community you must either moderate it yourself or appoint a willing moderator when you submit your request.
  2. Don't burn our bridges: while we value free speech, we also want to maintain a friendly and constructive atmosphere. Please refrain from posting any content that is deliberately hateful, as this could jeopardize our federation with other instances.

Since the instance is still small, start with just one !general community to concentrate everything. As people post in there it should become evident what other communities are needed based on post content.

It would be better to concentrate users into one forum during this growth phase as opposed to diluting content across many communities that will require a lot of work to keep active.

(as another comment, I need a !general at minimum to post something that doesn't fit in existing communities?)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah I agree on that. I've already seen two text posts in [email protected] that didn't really have anything to do with PCM but of course the people there didn't have another place to post them in.

How do you think such a #general community could look like? Something like [email protected] ? A strictly helpful [email protected]? Or pure chaos like [email protected] ?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I'm guessing more like main but it's for mostly any post so possbily like the lemmy "pure chaos" one

Personally, a catchall community seems like a good idea to me too. It could always branch into more specific support/chat/shitpost/meta communities later on if the post volume indicates.

I'd be pleased to see a ReturnToMonke community, hosted unironically on cutting edge social media technology. It could be a home for promotion, discussion, critique, and memeing of anarchoprimitivism and neoludditism. I'd be willing to moderate it, asking participants to post no illegal content, to keep the discussion civil and, of course, to refrain from inciting violence.

Edit: incorrected spelling.

I have something to post on this as soon as something like this is up

i have no authority here but i approve of making this guy the Monke King

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Aww you called us "cutting edge". I really like this idea. Discussing it with the other admins right now, will let you know.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just noticed the creation of [email protected]. If you don't want to host then that one could maybe help fill the gap. But I still think a deliberate spinoff of pcm would be worthwhile. PCM has a uniquely valuable culture of not taking ourselves seriously and of enaging with dissent. Besides, what's a monke without a meme to illustrate the point?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Nah actually 2/4 of us are very excited about this. I'm just waiting for at least one of the other two to give his vote because I want to make this the right way. But personally I'd love to have such a community.

edit: to make it clear, the other two haven't logged in the Discord yet

I want stupidpol to have a home on lemmy, but I think it should be run by commies just like it was on reddit, because that's part of what makes it special.

I can volunteer to moderate for the time being, but I'd welcome any commies who want to come take over

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Never heard of that but sure, nothing wrong with that. Kinda curious to ask, what the hell were you doing on a marxist sub if you're not a commie yourself?

Anyway, I'll bring that up to the other admins. Prolly gonna give you an update tomorrow.

Their bread and butter is making fun of identity politics, but they have a more chill vibe about it. All the right wing communities dedicated to that kind of thing tend to be more mean spirited. They're largely coming from the perspective that leftist politics has been co-opted by lunatics who are more obsessed with race, gender, etc than actual economic issues. So I think they tend to be "nicer" about it since their take is that those are people who should be on their side but are just barking up the wrong tree; whereas I think right wingers make fun of that stuff from a perspective that the people they're making fun of are a total lost cause.

My goal as mod there will be to keep the conversation as civil as it was on reddit, but not care one way or another about users' politics.

I have a theory of forum community organization of sorts, if you look at how an encyclopedia is organized for example:

https://infogalactic.com/info/Portal:Contents/Portals

There's a few top subjects of:

General reference, Culture and the arts, Geography and places, Health and fitness, History and events, Mathematics and logic, Natural and physical sciences, People and self, Philosophy and thinking, Religion and belief systems, Society and social sciences, Technology and applied sciences

So if a community is created for each, it covers all topics (and then people can make subcommunities where desired or necessary where there are other distinct communities)

edit: so I could mod something like "!health" for "Health and fitness", or !history for "History and events", etc.

I don't really have to mod any of these, just letting you know how you could create a few simple communities to cover all topics

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thanks for the idea, however I'm not sure of how I feel about that. If any of those topics particularly interests you, then sure, we can open some of them. But I wouldn't rush opening a community for every topic on Earth, just for them to remain empty and forgotten. After all, there's plenty of general purpose instances we are federated with, out there.

And more importantly, the reason why I said "you most mod it yourself or know someone that would" is because I don't want to spend my days as a janny (and of course we can't have modless communities either), so that's still a pretty important point to cover imo.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

they do all interest me as I like a variety of things and I could mod some (there aren't too many reports that really come in) although they may remain a bit empty, I'd have no guarantee of that

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

A shitposting community would be nice. And not one with normie memes, but one that allows more edgy and darker memes.

Something like r/ppnojutsu, r/doodoofard and r/wordington. Minus all the thugshakers and shit ofcourse

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

While I like the idea of having more memes on the instance, I feel like that's a bit too broad of a scope for the time being. If you have any memes that you'd like to share feel free to post them in [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, we should probably wait a bit as to let this instance mature.

Although i do think keeping the edgy/offensive memes from the general community is a better idea

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I guess it depends on how edgy we are talking, but yes, that is also true.

[–] antik 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Going from his history I would say his type of "edgy" is Freeforum or dankmemes type stuff and he is looking for replacements now that explosive-heads is going down.

[–] who8mydamnoreos -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There are already communities out there; i know because I blocked them as soon as I saw that stupid chart.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

My man said, "I only want PCM".
