Letterboxd changed its movie ranking system—and now it's being accused of xenophobia

Does anyone have any insight into what actually changed with how the score is calculated? Neither the dailydot article nor the linked letterboxd blog post really say what has changed, just that it is different now and that people are mad. (It's the internet, of course people are mad!).
