“Stinky tofu” sounds completely awful. I like regular tofu, but what kind of wretched description is that?

The best analogy I could think of is same with Durians, if you like it, you like it. The tofu itself smells like sewer, similar to durian smells like turd.

It's not the tofu itself, but when you bite into it and the juice comes out that it gets really pungent imo. I had it once but don't like it too much.

It's literally called 臭豆腐(stinky tofu) in asia. Alternatively you can call it pungent tofu but that doesn't fit the description of this food. For the uninitiated it will smell really bad, but for people who like it, the smell is rather distinct and very recognisable, and the smellier the better.

But once you pop it in the mouth, the smell isn't that bad anymore
