For people who like to carve things out of wood
Hell yea. This looks pretty sweet for a first project.
I also started with a linker video. He makes everything look so easy. Try the wizard next. That was my first thing we’re I was like wow this is actually a recognizable item.

Most of them were done using a flexcut detail knife. And maybe a bit way done with a BeaverCraft detail knife. I do have the flexcut carving or roughing knife, but i received it dull and for the life of me I haven't been able to get it sharp using a whetstone 😥. But that being said, the detail knife works great for this small stuff.

I had trouble making the nose/beak work on an owl and it turned me off from doing those kinds of projects, but I will try again a little later. I'm currently working on a set of books (from his recent video) which the few I made was really fun to make and paint.

Dude sharpening is so hard. I have a ton of knives and chisels and all kinds of tools for sharpening and I still suck at it. I think it just takes a shit ton of practice or maybe I need to have some one show me live because I also struggle with getting and keeping a good edge and it makes such a big difference.
Also I hear ya on the nose thing. I think it’s one of those first finer details that makes such an huge difference when it looks good/bad. I’ve fucked up many a wizard nose but it’s honestly kind of fun if u can pull it off and fix it after u mistakenly fuck it up lol

I also draw and paint (~~poorly~~ amateur-ly) from time to time, so I have a bunch of paint lying around. What I used in the photo was gouache. But I could have easily used watercolor or oil paint for it (maybe I should on the next ones).
Looks great! How long have you been whittling? Always wanted to pick it up.
Probably somewhere under 10 hours. I think it takes me ~1h per project + whatever time i take to paint it.
They are made from 1" x 1" x 4" blocks so they're pretty small and relatively quick to make.
If you do decide to pick it up, checkout Linker. He's got some great videos to draw inspiration from (and his videos kinda pushed me try it out myself).
