Don't take this as a fact but I think buying a not so old but not recent diesel might be the best choice. I have an old VW Golf 6 from 2010. All it requires is yearly service and thats it. It does around 5l/100km depending on where you're driving and how.
Somebody needs to do the math but I think buying a used one makes the least amount of environmental impact vs a new one even if you take into account the worse efficency of older cars.
As for gas vs diesel vs electric, you gotta do the math yourself, I'm to lazy :)
