Looking at getting into VR gaming, wanted to go with an Index, but due to the age, starting to wonder if there will be a new one soon? Any thoughts?

Acoording to leaks, new VR headset from Valve won't be competing with index. It's gonna be standalone, probably using steamos3, with new inside-out tracking tech.

I replaced my index with pico 4 and I'm very happy with it. I don't mind compression that much.

Okay that's interesting. So maybe not worth waiting then. I've just had a look at the Pico 4, seems good. Can play all your steam games on it?

Yes, You need to buy app called virtual desktop to stream output from pc to pico. Official pico streaming app seems to be laggy. You play wired or wireless if You have good wifi.

Awesome. Thank you for the info. So presumably if I'm going to mostly be playing via steam, I don't need the 256GB version? The smaller GB version would.be sufficient?

Yes, buy the cheapest one.
