People do realise that "running steam" isn't a normal requirement for the average car computer right? Even with its "crippled" specs, I'm pretty sure it still runs laps around nearly any other car.

So, after reading the article, is there any reason to care beyond 8Gb ram and 128Gb flash storage being unable to (unofficially) run Steam?

Weird clickbait feels.

I doubt there’s anything really tangibly wrong with it, just the sense that the playing field isn’t even across Tesla models even with the same overall designation for hardware. If they had called it HW4SX and HW4Y or something, it would be more clear they are different parts with different capabilities.

I do find it strange Tesla hasn’t tapped it as an extra way to generate profit though in the online configuration stage.

For Example:

Would you like to order your Tesla with with

  • HW4 8GB (no charge)
  • HW4 12GB (+$300)
  • HW4 16GB (+500)

It would likely cost them literally tens of dollars to generate hundreds of profit per car.

Why are you giving them ideas?

IMO if they did that I bet they would go the opposite way similar to rear heated seats.

Package all cars with GPUs + 16GB RAM / 1TB of flash, then offer the option at purchase or as in car upgrades. Wanna play steam games? Sure $500 software only upgrade.

Saves them assembly line differences and enables potential profit in the future as well, even after the car has been re-sold. If they sell the car themselves again through their CPO program they can even double dip like they do right now with EAP/FSD.
