A friend and I love in depth games but want to include our families, some younger and some not super drawn to scifi or fantasy.

Pandemic has been a great game for us but its nice to have some other options.

Are there any interesting RPG (DnD style) or stategy games that you would suggest?

I would suggest camping out on https://www.boardgamegeek.com/ and seeing whether anything tickles your fancy in the suitable genre and weight category. Advanced search, or the genre-specific rankings are very helpful.

Many folks make geeklists that address questions such as yours as well.

Such a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you're looking for a tabletop RPG system that doesn't lean heavily into sci-fi or fantasy that anyone can play, I'd recommend looking into Monster Of The Week. It's more like a Scooby-Doo or Supernatural style RPG where you're solving mysteries rather than fighting dragons, and it's basically designed for one-shots or short campaigns so you don't have to worry about getting everyone together at the same time every couple weeks for months; as long as the DM has a story planned you can pretty much roll up characters and finish your campaign in 1 to 3 sessions.

The system itself is less important (you can go with D&D, pathfinder 2e, or one of the other ones).

My suggestion is to look at possible adventures you might be interesting in doing, then pick the system that goes for it.

D&D has the largest offering in terms of official adventures, from traditional fantasy stuff, to detective work or dungeon crawl.

I've never played D&D and always assumed it was all mostly dungeon crawl and travel to the next dungeon. I was taking a look at pathfinder. I'll look at some adventures to see if there is one that would fit our group.

Root is not RPG but very much strategy - it's a war game set in a forest where the competing factions are Cats, Birds, a rebel alliance of assorted critters and a solo Racoon. It is a fantastic game!

The cons would be - the rules are quite hard to pick up straight away and it's 4 players only, so it depends how many of your family you want to involve.

Woah! Root looks like the type of game I was hoping to find out about. Thanks for the suggestion!
