My first time making Pie in cast iron

Excellent! First pie I ever baked was also an apple pie in a skillet...took it to my grandparents' for Thanksgiving

I do salty pies all the time. (Or quiche with a top/lid) and one good thing is that if the filling was a bit liquid and the base didn't cook well, after removing the pie from the skillet I just put it back in, then I put the skillet 5 minutes on the electric stove and base is cooked very quickly and good to go
