Narrowboat and UK inland waterways ( canal and river )

219 readers
1 users here now

A community for UK inland waterways enthusiasts. While boating is our main topic. Any UK canal or river based discussion is allowed.

Rules:

1: Be polite. If you have nothing good to say, say nothing. I am not banning rants. Just asking folks to take a min and consider the wording. I want every waterways user to feel welcome here. We should then be able to build a resource where folks can ask for advice as they plan some event. This means walkers cyclists fishermen boaters all have help and advice to give relevent to other users.

So please feel free to tell folks about an event that are things hard for you. We all enjoy joining in on the odd rant. But remember to use wording referring to the indevidual not the community they are a member of or activity they are partaking in. This way others with the same needs can learn from your needs from them while expressing their own from you.

I know this sounds like I am talking to 5yo. But really I do not want this to become Facebook like. In the way groups often attack each other.

2: No SPAM or sales ads. If demand exists. We can create a boats for sale wanted community. But please let's keep them off this community.

3: No NSFW. No one need narrowboats gonewild. Trust me you don't want me to join in so don't temp me.

Hi, we're on the K&A near Bath - not longer living aboard due work reasons but still happy leisure boaters - 52 ft trad bought 8yrs ago Cheers, Martin

Dave, thanks for creating the community. Wife and I have been on rental boats a few times and love it so much we for sure will be doing it again. We’ve considered a stretch of the Leeds - Liverpool canal as our next canal holiday. I look forward to hearing stories from other canal network lovers. It is a fantastic asset!

Fantastic to have you both here.

Hi my name is Dave. I created this community originally as a refuge for redditors escaping.

My brother and I are visually impaired boaters. We own a tiny 25ft narrowboat between us.

We have a mooring on the Thames. Bot swap over as we move the boat around the network through spring and summer.

I am currently on my way towards Fradley Junction on the Coventry. We tend to move slowly.

Our goal is to cross the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct then head back. With each of us doing the opposite bits we did there.

To reiterate haw slow we tend to go. We are expecting to take 4 to 6 months for the whole trip back and forth. We are obviously both retired now.

Hi Dave. I think this community is a great idea. I'm not a boater myself but I currently live in Cherwell Disctrict where the Oxford Canal flows, as you saw from the pictures I shared. :) I go for a walk along the canal almost daily and I love seeing all the boats and sometimes chatting with people along the way or helping them at the lock. There are some long term moorings where people have set up such unique displays to see along the path, I'll ask if I can take photos some time.

Hi Dave, Thank you again for taking the trouble to create this community.

The two of us and our dog live on the K&A. We've had our boat for a few years, but still feel like newbies!

Only had mine for 2 years. My parents spent lots of time on canals. And my brother and I were technically born when they lived on a boat. But we remember little of that.

Bit late to the party…

I’m a 2 year liveaboard on the London and surrounding system. I have a very old boat, so have had to learn loads just to keep going.

I’m frankly terrified of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, I’m so bad with heights! Good luck on your journey and there is nothing wrong with going slow!
