reminds me of the time when an artist, protesting defending architecture, created a public park bench with spikes that would retract for a little while if you inserted money in - a commentary on intentionally not allowing the homeless places to sleep comfortably.

then people came along and were like “that’s amazing, can you install them in my park?”.

someone would look at this and go “i see an opportunity to use this on someone! if they’re stuck here turning crank and they can’t afford to stop…adverts, paid promotions…etc”

I didn't know about that. That's just horrible.

I loathe how much you're right about this.

It should also drop $100 bills out the back side, into the lap of a fat dude in a top hat smoking a cigar.

Look, I'm fat and I smoke cigars. I don't hate the homeless but I promise I can change if there's money involved.

Best part is that since your minimum wage doesn't change, this idea can be relevant for many generations to come

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

didn't it though? It's like $15 here in portland

States can have their own laws, but the federal minimum wage has been $7.25 for 14 years now.

Mississippi CoL is a far cry from NYC

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

A big problem because it means a federal worker in NYC gets as much as a federal worker in Mississippi. That it hasn't changed for 20 years suggests both are underpaid, but the NYC worker has definitely got to get another job.

Yes, the text under the picture is misinformative for no good reason. It's still the wage of many of the people picking the fruit that retailers somehow end up selling for outrageous prices in NY supermarkets, so I'd argue it's something any American should be concerned about no matter how backwards their particular state is in this regard.

Turning a crank for 8 hours a day is pretty tough, I dunno.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Would you rather clean toilets for 8 hours a day?

[–] andobando 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah cause turning a crank for 8 hours a day non stop would make my arm fall off.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Considering people do things like that for 12-16 hours without their arms falling off, I seriously doubt it.

This is the beginning of those thingies from Rick and Morty that power Ricks car in the miniverse (or what ever the fuck he called it). Big corps are watching.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So can I come up to it and hook up a small electric motor to power the crank?

[–] seeCseas 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes but know that you're taking away the chance for a hardworking American to earn money :)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Work smarter, not harder.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I bet nobody would refill it.

The minimum wage rate in New York is $14.20 per hour as of December 31, 2022. The minimum wage rates differ based on industry and region. The minimum wage will increase each year until it reaches $15.00 per hour

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Fucking peg it to inflation rather than stopping at $15. Add a lag time if you have to in order to stop runaway inflation but I'm so fucking tired of fixed prices getting baked into law and never updated. Minimum wage should guarantee a certain standard of living and that means it needs to increase with inflation.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Ah, so almost 2 pennies every 4.97 seconds instead.

Weird that the price increases of basically everything is updated constantly, but the minimum price of labour takes a uphill battle once a decade to move it an inch.
