[email protected] is a community for things that you just don't get or understand. It's a community where you're welcome to be the opposite of the smartest in the room. Ask questions about things of which have perplex for years like "why was seeing a pig run a consolation?" or "why don't we shoo our space in to the sun?" and for those of you not comfortable with asking questions, even those like "why is going to bed with your socks on even though you have a spouse a thing?", you're welcome to be part of this community too and answer questions. The only thing I ask is that you be and not a condescending prick.

Why do people think holiday culture is cool?

Firstly, the impact of the flights isn't slim. It's a lot to deal with. Reports suggest that we have 120 years before the planet becomes inhabitable and yet a return flight to New York and back from London is worth 3 days. Doesn't that seem irresponsible?

Secondly, I don't get this thing where people go and sit in the sun? How are we as a society so entitled that we believe we're allowed to shorten life on the planet to go and sit in the sun?

Don't get me wrong, I support people that go on holiday for inspiration or to learn and then come back and offer the world something that would make it a better place, but to get a suntan? Why can't they get a boat? Or a blimp? Or even invent a new method of travel? Make star gates a reality? Okay, that's a bit far, but you get what I mean. Flying is too expensive for Planet Earth to afford, so why do we insist upon it for recreation?

What I don't get is why people insist on guilt tripping average people over their one nice leasure time of the year, when it realistically makes up only around 2% of emissions and is unnescessarily pissing off the average person making them dislike environmentalism, when you could be focusing all that negative energy on making a positive change by promoting green techologies that benefit everyone and address the most carbon intensive sectors of the economy.

Don't want people to travel by air? Why don't you promote, create or improve local travel destinations instead of making yourself the enemy of the people?

Just like the billionaire trained and funded Just Stop Oil morons & co, the only thing negative attitudes like that achieve is making normal people viscously opposed to environmentalism and apparently voting in far right governments.

I don't even get those kinds of vacations, it's stupid for other reasons, but I'm not gonna sit around complaining trying to make everyone around me miserable.

What is going to help is making people excited about green positive change that significantly improves their lives or at least doesn't affect them negatively, like making cities walkable and giving them a sense of place, promoting/selling/improving methods to make themselves green energy self-sufficent, promoting carbon negative construction, etc..

There are a billion positive things you could do to improve people's serf-like existance, but no everyone's insisting on making everyone else as miserable as themself.

If you want the government to invest, you're going to need to vote for politicians that care about improving what's available.

Who is making everyone miserable? It's a discussion. Why are you so defensive? Is your real name Cook? First name Thomas?

I agree with you. But we need to tackle multiple fronts. There's lots of places we can improve. Reducing the number of flights is one of them.

The whole point of a discussion is to discuss things. I'm sure you like everyone on Lemmy wants to get to know people and have fun and have discussions, people trading ideas is fun, people disagreeing can be insightful. This community is called, Just Don't Get It. It's not called Everyone Has To Agree. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Blimps have their own problems, like the choice for lifting gas is either helium, which we are running out of, or hydrogen, but we don't want hindenburg 2

Problem is not the idea, but that it sounds like you just don't like people. I can recognize it since I had that problem, but therapy helped me to love myself and than to start accept others.

There are many ways to help with ecology, but this is not one.
