Is the risk to national security just an excuse or is there a real danger? I suppose the cars could all crash at the same time or spy on their occupants but adding that capability without anyone in the USA noticing seems far-fetched. Maybe a receiver could be hidden, but I don't see how a transmitter could be.

National security is probably a real danger, similar to how TP-Link products are unusually insecure; but the real motivation is fossil powered brands feeling threatened by cheap competition
