Traveling light with the Pipamoka! (sh.itjust.works)

pipamoka with grinder

Just an update on my travels with the Pipamoka portable siphon-style brewer.
I recently forgot my mini coffee scale (17.5g seems about the sweet spot for this device) but since my Q2 grinder maxes out around 20g, it's not a difficult eye-ball job. By packing the grinder into the pipamoka it makes for a very tight little package:

This is everything I need minus the beans. Unlike my aeropress, this brews into itself - an insulated travel mug. Dosing is also aided by the grounds puck that you basically fill maximally. I'll still probably bring my scale if I remember next time, but no panics if the batteries run out.

I haven't had any regrets since switching from the aeropress. I will comment that if throwing this in a carry-on, it could get flagged by TSA. Twice now they've done a bag search for not being able to identify what this is.

A quick tip with TSA - if they always pull your bag to check it out, just take it out and put it in its own bin with no baggie on it. If you make it clearly visible, you may have better luck with them being able to clearly see what it is, and thus not having to pull you aside.

I once traveled with a larger container of miralax and they told me to do that to speed up the process lol

This is a sweet travel setup!

I hadn't heard of the Pipamoka before and I honestly thought for a second that it was going to be a Bripe-like device, due to 'pipa' sounding like 'pipe'.

Oh man. That looks ridiculous. Have you tried it? $89 is very steep for this, but the real deal breaker is brewing coffee at 185°. Looks like a conversation piece at best.

It is ridiculous, which is why I really want one.

I haven't tried it, but James Hoffman reviewed it in what is probably my favourite video on coffee YouTube. It's definitely not as utilitarian a solution as yours for a travel coffee setup!

James looks pretty good with a beard! TbF coffee always tastes amazing out in the woods.

Especially if you are ok with 185° brewing, you actually could probably fill the pipamoka with boiling water and just drop the grounds puck in whenever you are ready. The insulation is pretty good. Had never thought of using it like this, but I bet it would work quite well.
