Cognitive bias sets in when time and effort are put into something.

I got a bone to pick with your caption. Cognitive biases do not come about just because time and effort is put into something, quite often the opposite, actually.

When time and effort is put into something, you will become better at it, then you'll understand it more, then you'll form opinions surrounding it, and then (usually) you'll be able to make far more informed and rational decisions regarding the thing. In this context, someone that is distro hopping is time/ efforting their way through Linux and is squarely in the form opinions stage, which leads to them trying to figure out how to make the tool suit their needs better. It is simply a process of learning and understanding, not a breakdown of rational decision making.
