I joined as soon as it was open. Very quickly it was full of junk TiKtok videos (many with the Tiktok logo). As others have said you have to keep scrolling through the same videos in the same order to see anything new.
The feature that’s missing is some sort of “filter creator” that would enable users to build their own algos.
(To be fair, I can’t see why Tiktok works as an app other than as some global-scale brainwashing tool.)
The new build 11 released yesterday lets you see only loops from people you follow. There's also a "For You" option that I assume will eventually do what you're looking for. Right now it shows loops sorted by newest, like before
I dont really care for short form videos anyway and have never used the likes of Instagram / tik tok etc but now that I'm seeing loops videos pop up on my Lemmy feed I'll occasionally see something I'm interested in. However not being able to mute the video before starting to play it instantly puts me off and as such I ignore anything loops based already....
I tried to sign up, blasted thing spun forever and threw an error. Not ready for prime time.
I noticed they needed to approve my account or something. Took a few days to get the email.
5000 videos and it only shows you the same ones, in the same order, with 0 media controls, or search & filter functions. I just don't get this format.
it quite annoys me as well. "No annoying algorithms!"
...great. so it will never learn what content I actually like to see and will feed me random crap I don't want to see.
i get like the same 5 videos of someone walking around outside and a couple of ads for stuff I'm not even remotely interested in.
Being able to choose what it will show you would be cool and not require stealing your data to customize your feed
Google is the closest thing to that that i know, but their implementation is terrible
agreed. there is a way to keep that algorithm private. on a person to person case.
that information would just have to not be sold. thats the difference.
an algorithm wouldn't be inherently evil. the data collected is what's potentially dangerous. but if its kept to just your personal account, it could be quite safe
and make the app less of a chore to use.

Definitely won't without an algorithm, the general public would hate just seeing random videos not tailored to their preferences.
I hope so, but I feel like people will move to youtube shorts or whatever instagram calls theirs before they would consider Loops, just like they chose Bluesky over Mastodon.
I'm mildly annoyed it's not called Unspooled
