Check the top comments from this thread "Reddit: Killing a Giant". I've seen our server URL floating around some of the sub comments in Reddit related threads on HN before this week, but this was the first I found linked from the top comment. Comment here if you spot anymore out in the wild. ๐Ÿž๏ธ

If someone says "I'm never using Reddit again", they're probably just being dramatic and I don't think I believe them.

But if someone says, "I've signed up for a Lemmy instance and have set it up on all my devices and created convenient shortcuts and have found some interesting communities to read", that person has performed a greater act of defiance against Reddit than the first.

Personally, I haven't quit Reddit, but I've made sure to put a few other communities ahead of it in line. Many times I will reach my fill of social media before I ever get Reddit.

Agreed!

It is also useful to.be on reddit to let people who are dissatisfied know about fediverse alternatives like Lemmy and Kbin.

Although Lemmy feels quite busy now, the vast majority of redditors, even those interested in tech haven't heard of it.

Yeah I don't think I'm never using Reddit again. But without RiF, I'm probably never going to doomscroll Reddit again.

Iโ€™ll still use Reddit for cat pictures and stuff like that but this feels more like a community to me than Reddit ever did.

Hi, got here yesterday from HN! Had deeted my reddit account but needed something to read. Regarding HN federation, I installed neonmodem on my mac which aggregates HN, and Lemmy together. I like. waiting on the Mlem beta to open again or the app to release. using safari on iOS atm.

Something that just occurred to me: is there any reason why HN couldn't join the fediverse? I'd imagine it wouldn't be a huge refactor to create an activitypub compliant API. They wouldn't even need to federate, but just being exposed through the activitypub protocol would mean HN content could appear in our Lemmy/Kbin feeds

Interesting idea. Even if posting was read only from the rest of the fedaverse perspective, combining that kind of link aggregation for downstream commenting could have merit. Although, it looks like HN already provides an API, so perhaps a community could already be created to mirror the HN feed? I'm just guessing:

Good point, and by having a shim do it rather than HN itself, you could do it in such a way that it supports enough federation that the fediverse could have its own comment thread under the posts. They wouldn't propagate back to HN but it could still be cool.

Hi, I am new here :) just wondering: where's the programming content? All I see is posts about Reddit and Lemmy.
