Apparently there was a run of stage productions in the uk about silverlocks ( changed from gold color) in the mid 1800s.
I do wonder about the color wars and why gold was the winner!
Idk about the UK, but in the USA, there was ongoing debate to change our currency base to a bi-metal standard instead of just using the gold standard. The Wizard of Oz is supposedly all about that debate, and Dorothy's slippers were originally silver, walking on the gold brick road. They changed the slippers to ruby for the movie to show off their new techni-color technology, and removed any references to the political debate.
