A community for sharing favorite vintage and nostalgic recipes from years past. The goal of this community is to preserve our favorite dishes and share them with the world so that they don't go extinct just because they're not in the culinary zeitgeist.

Please tag your recipe titles with [RECIPE]. Be sure to include the dish name and it’s creator (person or business) in the title for easier searching. Please include the date the recipe was published, if possible.

Sharing a video? Tag it with [VIDEO].

All requests should be tagged with [REQUEST]. Before you post, make sure someone hasn’t already requested the same recipe!

No recipe blog spam! You can link to a personal blog in the comments, but please include the recipe itself in your post. Any post URLs should point to the actual recipe (website, image host, etc.) and not just serve as an advertisement to drive up clicks for your site.

We here in Vintage Recipes believe that information should be freely available. We learn by observing and analyzing what has come before. We do not believe in secrets, and we do not believe that old methods should be forgotten.

Where's the personal story before the recipe? Where are the ads and the unnecessarily large images of the finished product? /s

That hot currant breakfast bread is similar to a black currant banana bread I make today:

3 ripe bananas
60g melted butter (1/4 cup or 1/2 a stick)
150g sugar (2/3 cup)
200g unbleached flour (1 1/4 cups)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon baking soda
150g of fresh or frozen blackcurrants (without defreezing before use) (1 1/2 cups)

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C)
Mash the bananas in a bowl
Add the egg and butter
Put all the dry ingredients together into a fine mesh sieve or sifter and sift into the bowl
Mix well with a wooden spoon
Bake in a buttered loaf pan until a toothpick stuck into the bread comes out clean, 55 to 60 minutes.
Slice and serve.

Also good: 1/2 black currants, 1/2 dried cranberries. The trick with using any dried fruit is you want to soak them in cold water for 30 minutes before using or they'll soak all the moisture out of your bread.

Thanks! That's just a small section, I blame my grandmother who left me her dutch oven from the 1950s (center, loop handle).

Then I found an outlet store and it was all downhill from there! ;) No, seriously, they send 30%+ coupons off all the time.

I love the book layout! That’s genius.

I think my parents have a copy of this (or something that looks very similar)! Not sure anyone's actually made anything from it, though. Really unique design.

Just googling, wasn't able to find a complete scan of all the contents, but lots of copies of the book ranging from $25 to $150.

Definitely interested in pot pie or shepherd's pie type recipes if you find them!

This reminds me of the YouTube channel Tasting History with Max Miller.

Thanks for sharing!

I'm vegetarian, so I'm curious: are there any interesting vegetarian main-course dishes in there? Maybe something that's been forgotten or is unusual?
