One awakens to the truth of enlightenment (aka stream entry) by:

Actively learning and reflecting,
Independently verifying (without believing) to observe the truth
Putting to practise after seeing benefits to the condition of mind.

Enlightenment is the elimination of greed, anger and delusion, dissolution of the ego and realisation of non-self.

An enlightened being would experience unconditional joy, contentment, freedom from beliefs, a high degree of concentration, and blossoming personal/professional relationships.

How to view sentient beings? (self.buddhadhamma)

How are we supposed to view sentient beings? A confused conglomerate of aggregates? An amorphous hungry blob?

Don't we say that there are fundamentally no sentient beings? Is it correct to be compassionate to an illusion? Or are we supposed to have compassion for emptiness as a whole? Please advise.

They are a “conglomerate of aggregates”, they are transient, they are dhukka, they are not self, yet they are at the same time, beings worthy of love, respect, consideration and compassion. Come to realize the former and treat with them with the latter. Imo.
