A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

The legionaries had to buy their own equipment, though.

Kind of - by the time of the Legion system as we would recognize it, equipment was provided by the state, and then the cost deducted from the legionary's pay.
