Ergonomic, split and other weird keyboards

Rules

Keep it ergo

Posts must be of/about keyboards that have a clear delineation between the left and right halves of the keyboard, column stagger, or both. This includes one-handed (one half doesn't exist, what clearer delineation is that!?)

i.e. no regular non-split¹ row-stagger and no non-split¹ ortholinear²

¹ split meaning a separation of the halves, whether fixed in place or entirely separate, both are fine.
² ortholinear meaning keys layed out in a grid

I'm looking for "fat"? keycaps similar to what Matias uses for Esc, Ctrl, Option, Cmd and Space keys on their ErgoPro.
What search term should I use to find similar keycaps? I've tried "tall", "fat", "oversized", "big", etc., but I only find extra wide (in the X direction) or extra tall (in the Z direction) rather than in the Y direction.
Any help welcome.

Try U, e.g. 1.5u or 2u keycaps.

That gives keys that are wide in the X axis. I’m looking for keys that are large in the Y axis.

Rotate them. Voila! The x and y axis have switched.

Wasd keyboards sells individual keycaps. In their product page, ~~they list the dimensions as XxY. https://www.wasdkeyboards.com/custom-text-cherry-mx-keycaps.html I dont know if thats standard practice, and on this site only that particular tall size. Not sure about in the general sense. Maybe you can search for 1x1.5 caps and see what you can find.~~ Edit: nope, they dont even follow their own convention and just write 1xK where K is just rhe other dimension. Sad.

You could always find a parametrized 3d model of a keycap in a particular style, and manually create the model and order to have it printed.

I printed some 1.5u proto keycaps for Cherry MX keyswitches. I’ll try printing the “fat” keycaps next.

Hmm I suspect those are specially made for that board, especially since they’re using Alps switches, I’m not sure anything like that exists for sale elsewhere. Even if you could find them, they wouldn’t fit on a normal board, since there wouldn’t be enough space around them.

I’m curious what you want these for? That might help us give you better answers. If you want these for a custom keyboard, your best bet is probably to design it with Alps switches and ask Matias if they’re willing to sell you just the caps.

Yes, I’m building a custom board. I’ve been using the Ergo Pro and I like those fat key caps. I do not like the reliability of their key switches., so I’ll be sticking with Cherry MXs for the new board.
I just cranked out a batch of 1.5u keys for keyboard prototyping. They turned out “good enough”. That’s got me cocky enough I just might try printing some of those far keycaps.

tall custom keyboard keycaps?

Additionally, found "SA profile" and "XDA profile".
