Seems like pre-republican Latins were really into Greek hoplite cosplay.

Absolutely! The Greek method of hoplite warfare was actually used by Etruscans as well, and the Romans (and other Latins) up until around the late 4th century BCE, when they changed their military system after a few wars with the Samnites.
