I can completely understand a culture witnessing a volcano erupt without having any cultural/historic reference for it getting a tad freaked out.

Shit, I consider myself a fairly rational person, and I’d believe the end was nigh witnessing that.

Agreed! I have a high school science understanding of volcanoes, and I would be afraid if I stood before one today. Now zap me back a few thousands years with no idea what it is or why it is exploding or what the hell is coming out of it ... I would probably defer to the end of the world, too.
