With a base iPad that can be found almost everywhere at 300€, yes, it is. With a metal back and unparalleled "it works" fluidity.
I'm also afraid of the longevity of the pixel tablet. I have an iPad 2018 and it still updates itself regularly... The only apple product I own because they are all alone at the top.
Still don't like the interface though. Back button 2000km away in the top left corner... Who invented this...
Does the cheapest iPad still have the air gapped screen and nearly unusable storage? Not that it's a bad device but ecosystem compatibility is a big weight in any device consideration. If it's in your ecosystem it's a lot easier to overlook some shortcomings vs. switching ecosystems.
The cheapest iPad does have big bezels but I find them useful to pick it up and hold it. I have the 32GB storage but yes, all my photos are in a private nextcloud and videos on a server with plex. Indeed, I don't really see the shortcomings of apple's ecosystem. I mainly use it to read news, Manga and watch movies and photos with the family. I don't use Google's cloud either though, even if my last two phones have been pixels and I asked for a pixel too for work.
My big Amazon tablet was like $75 on sale, side loaded Google Play and it's been great for cheap Android games and Webtoons.
If money weren't important, Pixel tablet + dock would be nice for the compatibility and wireless charging; my tablet won't install like 10% of the apps.
But dang I got a good deal, they want like $180 now for the plus, the dock is like $40. And it's still 2021 model.
I think it looks pretty sweet. This is coming from someone who doesn't always have a use for their tablet. On the dock in the kitchen ready to show me the recipe while playing decent music through the dock is a pretty good use case for me. If I didn't have more screens currently than I need I'd be looking at it....for a black Friday sale. So I guess it is a little overpriced in my opinion with a big consideration of "don't really need it" and "will be on sale soon enough".
I think it'll last as long as the longest supported android tablet. Not as long as Apple's stuff but that's like a whole other game. I do think this is a nicer device than the cheapest iPad.
I have been looking into getting an Android tablet and I've considered the Pixel Tablet. But the price is high enough that buying a cheaper tablet (like the OnePlus Pad that also released recently) plus a Google Nest Hub instead would still be cheaper (in my country at least), so I'm not entirely convinced.
But then again some of the Samsung Galaxy tablets are even more expensive, so compared to that the Pixel Tablet isn't even the most expensive I guess.
Depends on whether performance really is a lot better on the Pixel Tablet, so I'm still considering it.
What are you planning on using the tablet for?
Mostly gaming, streaming and reading manga, some surfing too I guess.
After looking a bit into specs, I am kinda considering OnePlus Pad more now since that display is 144Hz, while Pixel Tablet's display is 60Hz.
