I'm struggling to find a source for this fact, but I read somewhere that his refusal to smile in pictures was due to his mother. She was emotionally unstable and made derogatory comments about his appearance and smile at a young age. As a result, Lovecraft became extremely self conscious about his smile and teeth, and as a result we have very few pictures today of him smiling.
