Ergonomic, split and other weird keyboards

Rules

Keep it ergo

Posts must be of/about keyboards that have a clear delineation between the left and right halves of the keyboard, column stagger, or both. This includes one-handed (one half doesn't exist, what clearer delineation is that!?)

i.e. no regular non-split¹ row-stagger and no non-split¹ ortholinear²

¹ split meaning a separation of the halves, whether fixed in place or entirely separate, both are fine.
² ortholinear meaning keys layed out in a grid

Do you prefer the track ball for your thumb or for your middle finger?

[–] pixelprimer 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Middle and pointer fingers for sure. Used thumb trackballs for 17 years and now my thumb is starting to hurt. More accurate as well I find

Or your palm?

But that's not enough keys!

How are your typing speeds on this?

[–] pixelprimer 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

80wpm usually but I’ve hit 100 when I am being a try-hard hahaha. Swapped to aptmak a few days ago so I am back to 40-50 wpm now while I get used to the new layout.

Good luck with aptmak!

Those keycaps look awesome. You using aptmak?

[–] pixelprimer 1 points 1 month ago

Modded Colemak dh with v z j on combo for the past months. But I am building a zilpzalp soon and took the leap to aptmak this weekend. Only 3 days in though.

How tf you use that keyboard? No ctrl, shift, num keys?

[–] pixelprimer 3 points 1 month ago

Hahah. Layers and combos. You can see a few people’s layouts on 30 key boards at the keymap db website. What’s even better is I actually don’t even use all the keys lol. https://keymapdb.com/

You can get the PCB from JLC https://github.com/jcmkk3/trochilidae

I’ve also got 3 pcbs left I’d give away for the cost of shipping Australia. Last I checked it was 15 usd to the US

Depends. Is this for an Apple device?

If less keys is better may depend on if it's mac or not (apparently).

Could be lack of customisation available on Mac? (guess only)

You program/configure your keymap into the keyboard's firmware so it is independent of your operating system. If you use Mac, you put your Mac specific keys into the map where you want them. It's totally up to you - if you want every key to be "a" you can do that :)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

What does this even mean?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Beautiful. Is that usb c or bt?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Looks like USB C to a pogo pin / magsafe type connector

[–] pixelprimer 1 points 1 month ago

Yep. Xiao BLE usb c but I used magnet connectors on all my boards
