The other poster got you, but also European mathematics didn't really use zero in medieval times. The idea of zero only made it to Europe in the 11th century, but took a long time to become widely adopted.

If they'd used binary with 5 options (‾ _ | / \) for 4 positions, they could have gone up to 2^20 = ~1 million...
