For people currently playing, how does it compare to something like Against the Storm or Dwarf Fortress?

Not comparable to DF really, Against the Storm is a closer comparison, but you can set parameters to peaceful and play slower if you want.

To me it feels like Farthest Frontier/Fabledom settlement building with Age of Empires-esque resource management and RTS mechanics

It's a fun game with a lot of potential, but it's very much early access. Be ready to encounter missing basic features.
