When lit, the depths are fine. But there's something about the absolute darkness and (since it's a new game and I've avoided spoilers) having no idea what could be down there that raises the hair on my neck.
Also, I had terrible framerates down there initially so I felt extra helpless/unable to respond :)
What are the Poe's good for?

You can turn them in to Bargainer statues for special gear, including Depths gear which protects you from Gloom
The bargainer statues are the ones that give you and stamina, right? Ive tried to get stuff from them but for some reason they never detect that I have Poe's or other tradeable items.

Bargainer statues are located in the Depths. There is one in Lookout Landing that will show you the location of other ones. Their inventory increases the more statues you find (total of 6 I think)

Are they the ghostly statues that you find sometimes holding weapons like traveller swords and such?

It’s nice and serene until you have 2 hearts left and you forget you can fast travel out 😭
I just flew around in my hover bike. Makes exploring the depths so much easier
