That pretty much sums up most careers in the arts. It’s either you have the money to keep yourself alive while you work to get your big break, or you know or are related to someone already in the industry who can get you in.

Sad, but true. But at the same time, everyone who makes it tries to sell the idea of a meritocracy -- because they want us to believe that those at the top "deserve" to be there.
