I enjoyed it, honestly nice to get a breather from the heavy episode last week and get into the Shi'ar empire. Also makes sense Xavier would drop everything when Genosha happened. If he wasn't involved and was shown to be alive in Shi'ar space this whole time, people would be constantly asking why he wasnt there to help when they needed him most.
x-men
The home of all things X-Men on the fediverse, be it comic books, film, television, gaming or any other medium that Marvel's mutants have inspired over the last half-century
It makes sense for Xavier to drop everything but I also feel like they could've held off on bringing him back for longer without needing to explain his abscense, he's far away from Earth after all.
Also, maybe this is a fault of pacing but the way he immediately dropped everything, on the verge of stopping an authoritarian space empire from being evil and told his fiance to go kick rocks cause he got more important shit to do kinda cracked me up lol.
Much like Lifedeath Pt. 1, I found this episode severely lacking. As someone who is reading the comics for the first time and is nearing the end of the Claremont Run, I loved the Lifedeath stories and was excited to see a proper adaption for this season. The end result, however, was two rushed, half-stories that were more an homage to the conclusion of The Fall of the Mutants. We didn’t get a chance to see Storm and Forge’s relationship blossom and their proclamations of love felt entirely unearned. For me, these points only serve to engender underlying pacing issues and a sense of confusion relating to the characters—including the Adversary—and their motivations. I think if both story lines were given full, dedicated episodes, they would have been much stronger.
Also, maybe I’m in the minority, but I wanted to see Storm struggle with and accept herself for who she is while being without powers, and returning to the X-Men to lead—or at the very least co-lead—the team. I was interested in seeing an adaptation of the famous duel between Cyclops and Storm for leadership, with Storm claiming victory despite being ‘powerless’ and the team welcoming her back with open arms. I wanted her to get her powers back, but I wanted that moment to feel more meaningful and to have happened at the end of the season at the earliest.
As for Xavier and Lilandra’s story, I liked it, but I think it happened too soon. Personally, I would have preferred a season or two of X-Men 97 without Xavier, giving the team a chance to cope and grow without their mentor/father-figure present.
So as not to be completely negative, I’d like to add that I loved last week’s episode and am excited to see what happens next. I’m glad to see Nightcrawler in the intro and now I wonder if Forge is also joining the cast.
Agree with everything you said, I also would like to add that I don't like the idea of Mr Sinister being behind Genosha, completely undermines the mutants being oppressed part of the story that they've made a point of showcasing as a big thing in pretty much every episode.
This episode didn't really do much for me unfortunately, I don't mind the idea of focusing on this subplot for an episode before going back to Genosha situation but the content of the episode just didn't work for me. Last episode packed in so much and it somehow never felt rushed meanwhile so little happened this episode and somehow it felt very poorly paced.
I found it difficult to care for the Xavier stuff in space, maybe its because I don't have nostalgia for the character but I felt very disconnected from the setting and the characters, felt like I was thrown in second half of an arc that I'm completely unfamiliar with.
Storm's stuff all sounds good on paper but in execution it felt very half baked to me, it moved way too fast. Also a lot of reused animation, the demon crawling upwards and twisting its head was repeated thrice, I don't mind clever reuse of animation but this was so blatant it was hard not to notice. Animation quality overall for Storm's part was quite poor.
Oh well, I hope the next episode is a return to form.
