"the car actually hit the top of a tree along Atwater before coming to a stop around the intersection of Atwater and South Eastside Drive, according to police. The damage to the tree can still be seen on the other side of a memorial at the base of the first tree the vehicle hit as it caught air."

This article doesn't specify, and I'm not a fan of tesla by any means, but how is it the car's fault? I thought teslas deactivate autopilot when imput from the steering wheel is lost. So if the driver fell asleep, that would deactivate autopilot and essentially be the driver's fault.

It’s just an awfully worded headline. The crash is still under investigation and cause is not known - car, human, other factor.
