Title. I plan on deleting my account soon but want all my comments to point people to lemmy. I know there are several ways to do so but I can't remember what they are. I did a search here before posting but nothing related came up.

I'm planning on changing my comments to something like:

Edit: Moved to Lemmy

but is there something better I can say?

I used power delete suite. It also let's you save a copy of all the original comments with their permalinks in a CSV.

You may need to run it more than once. I think due to rate limiting from reddit for many edits like this.

This is the way

That's what I used. I'll try running it a couple times today and see if it gets them all.

PowerDeleteSuite doesn't get everything, though. PDS goes through your New, Hot, Top & Controversial comments as displayed on your profile. However, your profile doesn't display everything - many comments are too old or middling to low karma and don't show up, so running PDS won't get these.

The only way to get these comments is to do a GDPR request for everything on your account. This will give you a CSV file with links to each comment. Then, you need to feed this into software that does it for you. Apparently shreddit can take these files, however I've not tried it yet and the PDS developer shits on shreddit because it requires you to provide your login details.

I used this tool to comment over all my old posts with a message about the protest, and then go through and delete everything. The export part was kind of janky, since it just spat out a weirdly formatted CSV file, but it did what I needed it to.

After it was done, I deleted my account! :D

For me it only exported the last set. The first few times it stalled with an error and I had to restart, but it had deleted comments and not given me a CSV of the ones so far.

In any case, PDS doesn't get everything, because not everything will be displayed on your profile. PDS goes through your New, Hot, Top & Controversial comments, anything that is not displayed in these lists will be missed. I ran it to completion and it said there was nothing left, but I had a couple gilded comments with <50 karma on the gilded tab that were still there, as well as many comment replies to the Top comments it had wiped.

The only way to get everything it seems is to do a GDPR request and use the links in the files you get.

Interesting. I must just not have had that much content then. I went through all the tabs on my profile, and all of them showed 'no content' after running PDS.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

They won't necessarily show in the tabs, I only had 2 gilded comments that were missed and shown in the gilded tabs. The rest of the remaining comments were just loose on reddit, and there were a lot of those. Mostly 1 karma comments, but for me comments with 50 karma or less. The main ones I noticed were replies down below old top comments I had made. I opened them before I ran PDS and after completion I refreshed, the top comment was gone but the little replies were still there.

Even after running PDS, you should still be able to do a GDPR request to see what's left, so long as you can convince them you're in the right jurisdiction (maybe a VPN would work).

Maybe add a link to join-lemmy.org . The documentation there is quite helpful for newcomers to understand how it works and where to sign up.

I generally agree. I feel, though, that that page needs an overhaul. Its dark, has screens of code and talks about link aggregation for the fediverse. Not something the average user will feel encouraged to spend time on. That's a page for people who know what's going on.

Needs to be a softer entry point. In my opinion.

I've done something similar using the Violent Monkey extension for Firefox, RES (to load all of my comments on a single page), and a script I found on Greasy Fork. That script was supposed to replace comments with gibberish, THEN delete everything, but I hacked the deletion part away and changed the gibberish edit for a custom text. Let me try and fix it so I can share it with you (unless someone with a better solution shows up).

You can try Redact app. I used it to mass edit all my comments and posts to

“Fuck /u/spez and fuck Reddit”

You could also use it on other social media platforms. Here is the link: https://redact.dev

If you figure it out let me know. I'll do the same.
