It's the top level internet country code for Mali.

It’s just a country code like others mention. Also I imagine it doubles as the “Marxist-Leninist” acronym in some people’s eyes given the developers’ ideology.

.ml is Mali

.ee is Estonia

.tv is Tuvalu

.ca is Canada

.ml is the internet country code top-level domain for the country of Mali. According to wikipedia, Mali is giving away .ml domains for free in an affort to promote their IT industry. I suspect that's the reason why some instances chose .ml domains. But that's just a guess from me.

Thanks, everyone! I too had found the mali result in my own searches, but that didn't seem to make sense to me. Guess it was true after all!

Well, it's also worth noting the creators of lemmy.ml are communist and ML is probably a neat way of linking it to Marxist-Leninism.
