How does the number of users online mean anything at all? Why would people care how many are currently online for Steam?

If you have a game up on Steam now might be a good time to put it on sale or to spend money on promotion, etc.

Otherwise it's just mildly interesting news about the games industry.

I’m not even going to spend the time reading an article from fucking pc games n .com.

I don’t give a fuck about how many accounts logged in, especially considering how many bot/alt accounts are around. I don’t need to read work from some “journalist” who thinks they can push the weight of fact around with the support of 3rd hand hearsay.
