During the stock market crash of 1973, shortages plagued the American people. Gasoline, electricity, and even onions became scarce. Everyone began nervously asking what area of their lives would be touched next.

In an attempt to alleviate fears, television comedian Johnny Carson came forward with the so-called toilet paper crisis.

The public, however, didn't think it was funny.
