About

Archaeology or archeology[a] is the study of human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture. The archaeological record consists of artifacts, architecture, biofacts or ecofacts, sites, and cultural landscapes.

Archaeology has various goals, which range from understanding culture history to reconstructing past lifeways to documenting and explaining changes in human societies through time.

The discipline involves surveying, excavation, and eventually analysis of data collected, to learn more about the past. In broad scope, archaeology relies on cross-disciplinary research. Read more...

We're delighted to announce that Time Team will be digging at Sutton Hoo in June 2024, working in partnership with the National Trust!

Sutton Hoo entered history with the discovery of a huge ship burial in 1939, thought to be the final resting place of the 7th century King Raedwald. The excavation by Basil Brown and Edith Pretty was recently immortalised in the film, 'The Dig'.

Following geophysical surveys in 2021/2022, Time Team has now been granted unprecedented access to excavate in the Garden Field.
