I want to make an online store but don’t want to pay $$$$ for Shopify. I looked into woocommerce and it looks exactly like what I want but hosting companies seem to charge extra for woocommerce options. I have deployed my own Wordpress in the past and know enough about front and back end to work things out on my own. Can I just get one of the standard Wordpress option and install woocommerce on it or does it need something extra in the backend that justifies the extra cost?

Also who do you recommend that is cheap and still fairly reliable. It’s a small shop for handmade customized items.

If you are that adept at things, why not get a cheap vps and install everything yourself? Vultr, aws or another one of the cheap ones would probably be more than you need.

@rdyoung @LazaroFilm I'd be careful with the race to the bottom. Cheapest doesn't mean it's going to be working well. Just saying

I just realized that I responded via Mastodon. LOL.

If I were you, I'd look for the most economic platform with the best uptime and support. It might not be the cheapest, but reliability is key.

You didn't respond directly to OP here. Just a heads up. Also, this is odd. I'm on sync for lemmy and I'm not seeing these responses in my inbox.

I get that. The ones I mentioned tend to be cheaper but I've used them and they are actually decent. Especially with what OP is saying they need, it's more than enough plus it's easy to add more ram, cores, etc if/when you need it.
