Beehaw's community for socialists, communists, anarchists, and non-authoritarian leftists (this means anti-capitalists) of all stripes. A place for all leftist and labor news and discussion, as long as you're nice about it.

Non-socialists are welcome to come to learn, though it's hard to get to in-depth discussions if the community is constantly fighting over the basics. We ask that non-socialists please be respectful and try not to turn this into a "left vs right" debate forum by asking leading questions or by trying to draw others into a fight.

MODERATORS

Like many others, I used reddit as a link aggregator to keep up with news and current events. I'm never going back to reddit so I'm using ino reader as my news app and was hoping to get some suggestions on good sources to keep up on news, politics, etc. Any suggestions on sites I should check out to stay informed?

i have a list of bookmarks for this, so take your pick of any of the following:

general, not ideology-specific

ideology-specific

longer form or more irregular

Might be good to put these in the sidebar?

probably yeah; i do think it's a little US-centric for my liking and a little sparse on ideological content (i want it to be sort of agnostic overall, ideologically) so improvements from the crowd would also be helpful here

Yeah, I think that will come in time as well. Thank you for being ideologically agnostic. The more people we're able to welcome, the better for the cause. Much better than shutting people out like so many ML communities do.

I'd add Mint Press News to the list.

From the UK.

Can be a bit hit and miss, but it's worth a read for socialists: https://www.thecanary.co/

Might be considered Stalinist by some, but it often does have some interesting articles from from various strands of leftists: https://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/

The first name that comes to mind is Jacobin.

Different sources emphasize different regions and politics. Most Leftist sources are not trying to provide news in the same sense as mainstream journalism, as much as analysis and criticism for broader events and trends.

In the US, Democracy Now may be the best example of an anti-capitalist replacement for mainstream journalism.

The Guardian, which has both US and UK editions, provides a mixture of left-liberal and anti-capitalist journalism.

Other sources include, for current developments, Truthout, Truthdig, It's Going Down, The Nation, the Monthly Review, Vice, and Vox, and for deeper analysis, the Chris Hedges Report, the Real News Network, the Laura Flanders Show, the Hampton Institute, and Jacobin. More theoretical analysis is being produced by Democracy at Work and meta (Centre for Post-capitalist Civilization).

The last source, meta, is the only I have given, other than the Guardian, not dominantly emphasizing the US.
