Fully paid? Can you have GamePass that is only half paid? Maybe thats 34m without free trial users? I thought free trial users wouldn't ever appear in metrics like this anyway.

They occasionally do "get your first month for $1" promotions too. Might have said it that way to clarify not using those numbers too

probably a good way of indicating he's talking currently paying subs and not saying something like "we've had 34 million people sign up for a paid account" when half of them have cancelled since

Being in business where I've had to make metrics like this, yee, companies will frequently "forget" to leave things like that out. That's part of the reason daily users was replaced with daily active users.

He might mean gamepass ultimate instead of just pc or just console?

That sounds good?

I'm not a member, but 34m sounds like a lot.

I think it's a great spot to be. Should be more than enough to be profitable if they need it to be and has ample room to grow given how large the gaming market is these days. If I was heading up the division responsible for game pass though I'd be working hard right now on forging a roadmap for how to expand into the mobile market. I think cloud gaming is an excellent way to deliver true gaming experiences to a crowd that today make do with seriously subpar experiences and extremely predatory monetization. Couple that with them making their own smartphone attached universal game controller and they will get filthy rich.

Thanks for the insight. Cloud gaming feels like that's where the industry is leaning towards.

Haven't done it personally. I do have mobile games and a steam deck. So I probably won't jump on it immediately, but will keep an eye on it.

Idunno. Even as a subscriber to game pass, it still kind of worries me that we're speeding towards "you'll own nothing and be happy" territory with arms wide open. Of course you can still buy the games on game pass, but how long until you can't?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

As long as games arent gamepass exclusive, and direct game sales stay consistent, I think we are largely safe.

But Im not exactly sleeping with both eyes closed, so to speak.

[–] wasted_in_time 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I think you have something there.

All the users that bought videos on Funimation, just to lose it all since they are shutting down.

Yeah, and I'm not blind to the fact that I'm falling for the same trap by "buying" games from the online store. Part of the reason that I'm pro piracy is because I have a series S, and am incapable of keeping my own copies of the games that I "own"

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

I mean they did herd everyone into this situation, and there's nothing we can do about it. I was fine with just paying for XBox Live, which allowed me to play online with my friends. I don't really give a shit about gamepass, and find this to be just corporate bullshit where they get everyone in the same line and then stand around bragging about how long the new line is...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

They recently rolled what used to be called Xbox Live into the service. This is actually really low numbers considering.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago (3 children)

If they bring it to Steam Deck, they'd probably get 1M more.

[–] RGB3x3 4 points 10 months ago

That's for fixing sure. I'm no shill for any company, but game pass is by far the most value-for-money subscription out there. Netflix is more expensive and doesn't give even half the entertainment value.

We'll see if the price doesn't get prohibitive over the next 5 years.

For sure! I once dual booted Windows on a Steam Deck just so I could get access to PC Gamepass and it was a miserable experience. The two top annoyances in Windows were:

  • Having to install a 3rd party apps to get the controls to be recognized.

  • The APU drivers weren't being maintained for new releases (maybe that's AMD/Valve's fault), so I couldn't boot a new release (at the time) like Cocoon.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

You need to bump to ultimate level for access to the console version, but you can already set this up. It's not trivial though. Not sure I'd recommend it though.

I assume you're talking about the cloud version? My coworker said they could access Game Pass through the browser on Steam Deck, but that's not really the same as running on Steam Deck, that's streaming to Steam Deck.

I think there are a lot of Steam Deck owners who want games running on the Deck before buying the service (I'm one of them).
