Improve The News is a free news aggregator and news analysis site developed by a group of researchers at MIT and elsewhere to improve your access to trustworthy news. Many website algorithms push you (for ad revenue) into a filter bubble by reinforcing the narratives you impulse-click on. By understanding other people’s arguments, you understand why they do what they do – and have a better chance of persuading them. **What's establishment bias?** The establishment view is what all big parties and powers agree on, which varies between countries and over time. For example, the old establishment view that women shouldn’t be allowed to vote was successfully challenged. ITN makes it easy for you to compare the perspectives of the pro-establishment mainstream media with those of smaller establishment-critical news outlets that you won’t find in most other news aggregators. This Magazine/Community is not affiliated with Improve The News and is an unofficial repository of the information posted there.

  • Los Angeles police detained Killer Mike at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, after he won three prestigious music awards, and escorted the rapper out of Crypto.com Arena in handcuffs. Associated Press (LR: 3 CP: 5)
  • Mike, aka Michael Render, was placed under arrest and transported to Los Angeles Police Department Central Division, where he was booked for misdemeanor battery. The 48-year-old was later released on zero bail. CBS (LR: 2 CP: 5)
  • Render was arrested at 4 p.m. (local time) after he allegedly knocked down and injured a security guard trying to keep the musician and his entourage from passing through a specific area in the venue. Los Angeles Times
  • A known critic of law enforcement and police violence, Render blamed the "overzealous security" for the altercation. New York Times (LR: 2 CP: 5)
  • Due in court on Feb. 29, Render received his first Grammy in 2003 and has since been outspoken about political and social issues — particularly those affecting the Black community. FOX News (LR: 4 CP: 4)
  • A prominent activist at the local level, he urged rioters in his hometown of Atlanta to not destroy the city amid their protest of George Floyd's death in 2020. Peoplemag

Right narrative:

  • While the media talks about his political activism, it ignores the rapper's refusal to endorse Joe Biden for president. Render has been extremely critical of the Biden administration's policies on minority communities. There seems to be a notable shift among Black men in the US away from the Democratic Party — a trend that scares the party establishment. It's reasonable to wonder if Killer Mike's arrest was largely due to his refusal to pledge fealty to the Biden campaign.

Left narrative:

  • Unhinged right-wing conspiracy theorists were chomping at the bit as they sought to spin Killer Mike's arrest as another legal attack on Donald Trump supporters. The musician got arrested and was quickly released in an isolated incident at the Grammys. This is not retaliation for his refusing to endorse Biden — it's a microcosm of how right-wing conspiracy theories can spread on a whim.

Nerd narrative:

  • There's a 50% chance that at least 14.1% of black voters will vote for a Republican president in the 2024 US presidential election, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Now I wasn't present at the scene or anything, but knocking down a

"security guard trying to keep the musician and his entourage from passing through a specific area in the venue"

...seems to me like it has exactly zero to do with Joe Biden, or anything political for that matter. But what do I know.
