Perhaps it was the "Jean le Flambeur" trilogy by Hannu Rajaniemi?
This sort of happens in The Foundation series. In the last book, Foundation and Earth, the main characters >!locate Daneel. Daneel is a robot who has been manipulating the course of history (for the better) but his brain has gotten too old and is no longer able to hold new memories.
