MODERATORS

Hi folks. I am hoping to find some people that are into algorithmic composition, creating music with code, designing algorithms, etc.

  • Are you one of those people?
  • Do you know others?
  • Can you recommend any other communities for that?
  • Is there interest for having that kind of community here?

Thanks!

I am a decent coder but not great with algorithm design. (Rather a developer that builds scalable platforms).

But I will keep an eye on what’s going on here because I am definitely interested.

I also build scalable platforms for my day job. I was a bit trepidatious when I started with audio coding personally. There have been some challenging concepts to learn along the way (of course), but I personally have found it to be no less accessible than other complex code/infra work. In my experience it will take some endurance and persistence to make ground - but you already clearly have some background in the musical domain. That would carry you a long way!

That’s good to hear. Ik currently struggling with managing my workload but audio programming definitely is a curiosity I have. But it’s competing for my my attention right now.

I’m interested (but not very experienced) in making music with code, as in ChucK, and making music with nodes and branches, as in Midinous, but not randomly generated music. I would be interested in chatting with others about music with code and music with nodes, but I don’t already know a community for that. :)

That's awesome! ChucK is how I got started with music coding a couple of years ago. Moved to C++ when I found the edges of ChucK's performance, type system, etc.

I have created algorithmic_music. Come say hi!

I'm a developer and have been interested in making a VST and/or DAW for a long time, but I'm too busy with other projects to dive into that any time soon. I think making a community for that kind of thing makes sense though.

In short: Yes :)

I spent years composing music generated by simple C programs and then some years more making algorithmic A/V toys disguised as video games, and I am currently making a commercial video game where all the music is generated in realtime by PureData.

I got interested in eurorack primarily because I thought I could control everything DAWless by algorithmic voltage control from an Arduino or something. That project's actually been a total failure LOL

I think the places I'd recommend for this sort of thing RN are the forum https://llllllll.co/ and the various members of the highly inspirational Mastodon server https://merveilles.town/ , though the best discussions there require you to join so you can be a member of the local feed.

That mastodon instance is invite only right? I'm very new to this fediverse. Are some feeds in mastodon private? I thought you could see the content from other instances

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, although they're approachable so asking for an invite might work if you mesh with their Idiom. You don't need to join to read their feeds, no. I think you won't be able to get the combined feed is all. I just follow a bunch of Mervilles people normal type.

Some Mastodon servers have a special "show only server local" visibility type, but it's very rare, since usually the point of Mastodon is the interconnectivity.
