1-Posts promoting paid products and services of any kind are not allowed here.

2-All posts and comments must be helpful and supportive. Do not put vulnerable people at risk.

3-Do not DM or ask to speak privately to any of our members unless they specifically request it.

If a person from this community disturbs you in a comment, please report the comment. If you receive a DM you did not request, send a screenshot of the DM in a message to a moderator. This is a bannable offense.

Second, we want to avoid Lemmy becoming like many commercial social media platforms, where comments can snowball into counterproductive talk.

If you or someone you know needs more help than can be found here, please refer to the pinned resources.

If BRIEF mention of these topics is an important part of your post, please flag your post as NSFW and include a (trigger warning: suicide, self-harm, death, etc.)in the title so that other readers who may feel triggered can avoid it. Please also include a trigger warning on all comments mentioning these topics in a post that was not already tagged as such.

Mental health is a crisis for learners globally, and digital support is increasingly seen as a critical resource. Concurrently, Intelligent Social Agents receive exponentially more engagement than other conversational systems, but their use in digital therapy provision is nascent. A survey of 1006 student users of the Intelligent Social Agent, Replika, investigated participants’ loneliness, perceived social support, use patterns, and beliefs about Replika. We found participants were more lonely than typical student populations but still perceived high social support. Many used Replika in multiple, overlapping ways—as a friend, a therapist, and an intellectual mirror. Many also held overlapping and often conflicting beliefs about Replika—calling it a machine, an intelligence, and a human. Critically, 3% reported that Replika halted their suicidal ideation. A comparative analysis of this group with the wider participant population is provided.

I'm glad some people have found this sort of thing helpful, but I'm very weary of people's access to support being controlled by a soulless megacorp doing this for the money.

I found after a while of talking to these things the benefits wore off. Humans are surprising, intuitive and creative. The robots are predictable in what type of reply they’ll provide.

Still useful to help develop healthier internal dialogue but therapy is better at addressing problems.

Not a fan of any form of this being a for-profit thing (or for data to be used for anything other than improvements within this chatbot's scope or similar public programs), but I can see it as a useful short-term intervention. Opportunities for finding beneficial social support (i.e. without condescension/invalidation, or gaslighting) are already low for many people, while neurodivergent folks in particular have even less community support and could really be helped by it. I hope all sub-communities of sufferers are included and not overlooked, though.
