I've been watching an LP of this game; my impression is that the boss battles with certain characters are impressively scripted. You get a real sense of tension in those battles. Story wise, it's a little flat for me. Certain characters feel more alive than others, my impression is that they used Game of Thrones for inspiration. Their story lacks nuance, certain thematic elements don't work well due to this. Most of their creative energy was poured into those previously mentioned Boss Battles. The story is just a means of getting the player to those impactful battles. It's not a bad game, I give it a: I'd watch someone play FF16, but not buy it out of 10.

Considering the reasoning, I'm even more down to try it than ever. I understand the appeal of the "real" JRPG stuff, but it was never for me in gaming.
