I don't think it actually went private. They went "read-only" so that this:
could be on the front page.
I honestly think that would've been the smarter move for every sub.
I think both have their potential. Going dark will be seen by reddit behind the scenes. Going read-only will be seen by the users.
That's what I said. However, I do believe that they were truly private, not visible for normal users, before that brief outage just now.
at least one other sub that i know of, r/2westerneuropean4u, went from private to restricted, and are only allowing posts that protest the API changes.
