I was surprised when I went to North America and the cashier at a grocery store asked me "how's it going?". I was speechless for a few seconds, and just stared at her, puzzled, thinking "why would you care how I'm doing, I'll be gone in 30 seconds anyway". I started answering something along the lines of "ummm... Pretty good... I guess? I'm just shopping for some snacks... How about you?" and she became just as confused as I was. It was only a bit later that I was told what that question really means.
