It seems to take nearly 10 minutes to get started. What's actually happening? Are the pistons literally unable to move in the cylinders until the engine is warm enough?

Party Gas=Ether aka Easy Start (or "Start ya bastard" in Australia). Sprayed into the air intake to encourage reluctant engines to fire up. It was a frivolous humourous remark, I think you'd need unfeasibly large cans for an engine that size ๐Ÿ˜€
