That's ridiculous. Baseball should always come before work. Someone should get a firm talking to.

I don't really see the point in using the helmet anyway, besides that it's funny. Maybe you get a little more extension, but it just seems risky

It seems to me like the helmet was flying off and he instinctively caught it, and then happened to have it in that hand when he slid in. I don't think he needed the helmet extension to have been safe. The ump probably thought he would have been safe anyway. And the line is blurred now, anyway, now that everyone else uses those wedge gloves.
